Cake Should Be Fun!
It's a cake, after all. It ought to be fun. If you want serious, serve a salad. Salads are serious, as are casseroles—maybe not a serious as salads but you get the idea. Cake, on the other hand, cries out to be fun and frequently funny. This may include both funny (strange) and funny (ha, ha).
A fun cake makes a festive occasion more festive ("Harold, congratulations on your first real job") and makes dreary occasions less dreary ("Sorry, Harold, welcome to the working week").
